The intent of this course is to introduce financial investment instruments and its applications to financial planning. The course will focus on educating individuals on the different types of financial accounts that may be used for wealth accumulation. The goal of the course is to understand the investment process with the financial markets to provide suitability for their investment goals. Thus, evaluate the return and risk implications of different investing strategies and tactics. This course provides the student with an understanding of the various types of securities traded in financial markets, investment theory and practice, portfolio construction and management, and investment strategies and tactics. This course will provide comprehensive information relating to these topics and will stress the implications for the Financial Planner to consider for a client. Team case study projects are used to apply concepts. Students are expected to have a basic understanding of Statistics, or similar, and successful completion of FYCS Family Resource Management and Intro to Personal Finance.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will:

  • Know the types of investment vehicles and the characteristics of each.
  • Understand the relationships between securities and economic factors/conditions.
  • Be able to value different types of securities including stocks, bonds, and options.
  • Understand the concept of efficient markets and its implications.
  • Be able to determine client risk preferences.
  • Be able to determine asset allocation for a client and methods of determination.
  • Understand the nature of investment risks and ways to mitigate these risks.
  • Understand diversification and strategies for achieving.
  • Understand the relationship of taxes in investment choice and be able to incorporate tax implications into investment decision making context.
  • Understand the nature of investing for the life-cycle and how it shapes investment/portfolio recommendations.
