Personal & Family Financial Planning will teach the comprehensive principles of the financial planning process. This course will prepare you for a career within the financial services industry or academia using the ethics and ethos of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. The course will apply theory and practice to set the foundation for the core financial planning competencies. As a practitioner or academic, implementing the art and science of financial planning requires understanding interdisciplinary theories and applications. This course will expand on the breadth of the discipline to prepare you for advanced courses in each subject in greater depth.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Learn the financial planning process and apply it to various personal and family situations.
  • Integrate family decision making with the basic financial management actions.
  • Construct SMART goals and a financial plan of action.
  • Differentiate the different environments and how they affect personal and family financial management decisions.
  • Create, analyze, and interpret personal financial statements.
  • Perform calculations involving compound interest, inflation, debt, and ratio analysis.
  • Integrate fundamental concepts of personal and family wealth accumulation and management into a basic financial plan.
  • Integrate fundamental concepts of personal and family risk management and insurance concepts into a basic financial plan.
  • Integrate fundamental concepts of personal and family tax and education planning into a basic financial plan.
  • Integrate fundamental concepts of property ownership, business and estate planning into a basic financial plan.
