Program Description

This online course will familiarize the clinician and healthcare worker with the most recent scientific updates regarding the relationship between tobacco and tuberculosis. The curriculum is provided through lecture and the faculty has been selected for their knowledge of issues related to tobacco use and tuberculosis.

Requirements for Successful Completion

  • This CME activity consists of an educational component (lecture videos in an electronic format, which is followed by an online discussion post, storyline activity, and/or a quiz).
  • Certificates are awarded upon successful completion (80% proficiency) of the course.
  • In order to receive credit, participants must complete the activities in their entirety.
  • The University of Florida College of Medicine will report CME credit to CE Broker when applicable.
  • Participants must complete online evaluation of the course in order to obtain CE/CME certificate.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participation in this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe three major conclusions listed in the "2014 Surgeon General Report on Smoking" regarding TB and Tobacco
  • List two major conclusions outlined in the "A WHO/The Union Monograph on Tuberculosis and Tobacco Control"
  • Describe three community interventions discussed in the "CDC Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs"
  • Identify and describe 5 types of tobacco and nicotine products when interviewing patients to determine best practice outcomes
  • Describe the stages of change in the stages of change model when conducting assessments to integrate into the TB program
  • Describe the pharmacokinetics of nicotine to aid providers in treating TB patients who use tobacco
  • List the types of nonprescription NRT products for tobacco cessation to aid in treating TB patients who use tobacco
  • List 3 populations disproportionately affected by tobacco use to aid in providing tobacco cessation to TB patients
  • Describe the burden of tobacco use among people with psychiatric and other substance use disorders and ways to address it to aid in providing tobacco cessation to TB patients

Registration

  • Participants must have basic knowledge of tuberculosis.
  • The course is free but you must pre-register to attend.
