Engineering Project Management

Professional engineering staff with a high level of competency in management of the project ‘Triple Constraints” (scope, schedule, and budget) is widely recognized as a critical project management skill by most governmental and business entities. These organization must have Project Managers that can recognize, analyze, and balance often opposing and conflicting forces required to successfully deliver the agreed-upon project scope on time and on budget. This short course examines the fundamental foundations of scope, schedule, cost management, and resource allocation to enable the student to analyze various increasingly complex project scenarios and decide on the best project path forward. Understanding the push-pull effects of the constraint triangle enables a better, more knowledgeable approach to addressing these complex issues in real life projects.

Course Information

This course is administered entirely online via the Canvas course management system. It will run for a 6-week period but will be open for 8 weeks from the designated start date.

The course consists of two modules of concepts, followed by a 3-step simulation that will implement the knowledge gained in the two initial modules. The concept modules comprise a series of lecture video topics, related readings, and related activities. Students should plan on completing the module content in the sequence presented. A schedule is provided for guidance on the course completion. Lecture videos will be accessible online for an unlimited number of times, within the prescribed course period. The slides used in the video lectures and the course content materials (except for the course text) will be available and are downloadable.

Students may watch lecture videos and complete individual activities within the modules generally at their own pace. Several of the module activities are discussion board-based that should be completed within the timing prescribed by the schedule.

Students will be required to purchase the course text described below. Other course materials will be provided free of charge via the Canvas course site (or the University of Florida e-library system).
